Ice Road Truckers

I have a new television addiction…The History channel’s Ice Road Truckers. The reality series documents of six ice road truckers, a relatively unknown occupation that is considered to be one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

Just a few miles south of the Artic Circle are diamond mines. Given the terrain of the landscape, paved roads are few and far between so the truck drivers haul vital supplies to the mines over frozen lakes that double as roads during the winter; these ice roads are the only way these supplies can get to the mines.

Through the years, these frozen roads have been the cause of the death of dozens of truck drivers. So why would someone want to risk their life as an ice road trucker? One word: money. It is literally a dash for cash, as drivers are paid substantially for each load they can successfully deliver within the short season the lakes remain frozen.
